Chapter 11

Pumpkin

I was leaving work after a long and tedious day. Callers had annoyed the hell out of me. I always got a kick out of callers threatening to take their business elsewhere, like I give a damn. I abused my mute and hold button all today and purposely hung up on a few people who wouldn’t calm down and thought they could talk to me any kind of way. I kept wishing the phone lines would go down, but that didn’t happen. I needed a bottle of tequila with my name on it after the day that I had.

As I trotted to my car, I noticed a white envelope sitting on my window shield with a single red rose being held down by the window shield wipers. A small smile crept upon my face thinking it could possibly be a secret admirer. Once I made it to my car, I grabbed the envelope, opened it and began to read it. Goosebumps covered my skin when I read the only words written on the plain white printer paper that read, “You’ll be sorry.” I dropped the paper and looked around the parking lot. Since work had just let out and it was clock out time, the entire parking lot was packed like sardines in a can. I scanned face to face, trying to see if I could notice any type of behavior to let me know who could have put the note on my car with the rose.

I quickly picked up the note, unlocked my door, and hoped in my car. Dominic had another thing coming if he thought that he was going to fuck with me. I fished for my cell phone in my purse and called the police precinct. My hands were trembling, I was so scared. I loved my kids and I’ll be damn if I go back to an unfaithful and abusive man.

“Duval County Jail, how may I direct your call?”

“Hi, yes, I need to reach detective Neil Berry please.”

“One moment please while I transfer your call.”

I stood impatiently in the parking lot looking around.

“Detective Neil speaking, how many I help you?”

“Hi, this is Patricia Diaz. You gave me your card the day that I filled out an order of protection against my husband, Dominic.”

“Oh, yes, I remember you. What seems to be the problem?”

“Well, you told me to call you if my husband Dominic contacted me. Well, I believe he did. He put a single rose on my car and he left a threatening note.”

“What did the note say?”

I repeated what the note said.

“Based off what you’re telling me, I can’t go and arrest Dominic.”

“Why not?” I asked shockingly.

“There’s lack of evidence because it’ll be your word against his. You would have to see him in the act in order to get him for violating the restraining order.”

I blew air from my lips and took a few quick breaths. “This man is going to kill me!”

“I’m sorry but this is just how the law works. Look, you have my number so call me if you see him in your presence.
